Mini seemed to take a swing at Volkswagen\'s \"PunchDub\" ad campaign at the recent New York auto show. But everyone says, with a straight face, that it was a malice-free coincidence.

A sign at the Mini stand -- which faced VW -- urged: \"Punch something that punches back.\"

It seemed a clear reference to VW\'s current \"PunchDub\" ad campaign, which promotes an old kids\' game -- called Punch Buggy or Slug Bug -- in which car passengers punch each other whenever they see a VW Beetle. It\'s in reference to the Beetle\'s nickname, the Bug.

Passers-by chuckled over the apparent attack on VW.

But Jim McDowell, head of Mini USA, said there was no malice intended. It was the second year Mini has used the sign, and the intent is to promote a John Cooper Works performance model. \"It means driving the car pedal to the metal and having fun,\" McDowell said.

No harm, no foul, says VW. A spokesman said the Mini sign was no big deal -- and may have promoted the PunchDub campaign.

Suggestion for next year\'s sign: \"I\'m rubber, you\'re glue... \"

MINI actually has been trading punches with VW for a while...
there was an add that was launched when VW reintroduced the Rabbit...
